Nels Olson of Korn/Ferry knows that being a leader in the corporate world is not an easy task. To get there, people must have developed strong leadership roles throughout their lives. You can kind of think of the individuals that are in leadership positions in the corporate world as baseball players that worked their way up from college, into the minor leagues, finally making it to the majors. Corporate leaders have a ton of skill sets that they must possess in order to be successful in their roles at work, but there are some inherent personality traits that they must possess as well according to Korn Ferry.
First and foremost they must be incredibly intelligent and have a deep, fundamental understanding of every aspect that the company is dealing with. The fact that they are a corporate leader means that they will have to understand how all of the various pieces of the company work and how they fit together, creating a multidimensional entity. Without this, there is no way that they would be successful at this type of level, but there are far more things that they must possess. They need to be able to recognize how the business market is developing and be able to make decisions that will put their company in a better position. Furthermore, they are going to need to be able to work well with a great deal of people and to be able to get others to work well together. The people skills aspect is huge in this type of role, due to the fact that corporate leaders have to deal with all of the major people in the company, as well as other top ranking individuals from other companies that they are likely making deals and doing business with.
Being a corporate leader really is a balancing act in which a person must be well versed in a number of different areas. They need to be able to get the people that are working under them to do the jobs that are set out for them effectively and efficiently, but they also need to be a person that the other works respect and can work well with. If a corporate leader is strongly disliked by others in the company or lacks the people skills that are necessary to be successful in this type of a position, there is no doubt that in due time they will become unsuccessful at the position.
